Being present and on time is crucial for a successful year. Students who are absent for even one day miss valuable instructional time and can easily fall behind in school. Too many absences - excused and unexcused - can keep students from succeeding academically.

Please be sure to come to school on time and ready to learn every day and do your best to leave outside appointments for after-school hours. Of course, we understand there are times, due to illness or other unforeseen events, that require you to be late or miss a day of school.

All-Day Absence

Attendance will be taken by the teacher during every class period. All absences will be determined as either EXCUSED or UNEXCUSED depending on the reason provided by the parent/guardian. If your student will be absent all day, please contact us by doing one of the following within two days of the return from the absence:

  • you can call the Attendance Line at (804) 966-9655, and select option 1. Please leave a voicemail message. The attendance line is open 24/7

  • your student can leave a parent/guardian note in the box outside of the front office.

Late Arrival

Any student who arrives late to school must sign in at the attendance window to obtain a pass to class. All tardies will be determined as either EXCUSED or UNEXCUSED depending on the reason provided by the parent/guardian on the same day of the tardiness.

An email can be sent to NKMSattendance@newkentschools.org.

Early Dismissal

If an early release is necessary, the parent/guardian will need to report to the front office to sign their student out.
