6th Grade
Sixth grade at New Kent Middle School is an exciting year full of academic growth, exploration, and new opportunities! Students will build a strong foundation in their core classes by taking English 6 or Advanced English 6 and Math 6, Advanced Math 6, or Accelerated Math 6 every day. They’ll also dive into Science 6, U.S. History to 1865, and Health and PE 6 on an alternating-day schedule.
In addition to core academics, students can personalize their experience by choosing from a variety of electives. Students may select one year-long elective—such as Beginning Band or Beginning Choir—or opt for the 6th Grade Wheel, choosing four different quarter-long electives. Wheel options include Art 6, Business Skills and Keyboarding, Exploratory Language, Theater Arts, World Drumming, and more. Each course offers hands-on learning, creativity, and the chance to discover new interests.

7th Grade
Seventh grade at New Kent Middle School is a time for students to deepen their knowledge, explore new interests, and continue building the skills they need for success. Students take a full range of academic courses, including English 7, Advanced English 7, or English 7 with Lion Reading 7; Math 7, Pre-Algebra 7, or Math 7 with Foundations of Math 7. All students also take Life Science 7, U.S. History II: 1865 to Present, and Health and PE 7 as part of their core schedule.
Students have the opportunity to customize their learning experience through a variety of exciting electives. Some courses are offered as semester-long electives, such as Art 7, Computer Solutions, Creative Writing, Theater Arts 7, Agriscience Exploration 7, and more. These allow students to sample different subjects and discover new passions.
For students seeking a deeper dive, year-long electives are also available. Options include but are not limited to Beginning Band, Concert Band, Lion Choir, Intermediate Theater Arts, Multimedia Journalism, Intermediate Art, Sculpture and Crafts, Introduction to Agriscience, and high school credit courses such as Spanish I, Part A and French I, Part A.
Some electives may require an application or audition. Students interested in advanced opportunities in the arts or world languages are encouraged to review course expectations carefully.

8th Grade
Eighth grade at New Kent Middle School marks an important transition year—helping students prepare for high school while continuing to explore their academic interests and strengths. Students will take core courses including English 8, Advanced English 8, or English 8 with Lion Reading 8; Pre-Algebra 8, Pre-Algebra 8 with Foundations, or Algebra I, a high school credit course. In addition, all students will take Physical Science, Civics and Economics, and Health and PE 8.
Eighth grade students have access to a wide variety of engaging electives designed to spark creativity, build skills, and help them explore possible future careers. Semester-long options include courses like Art 8, Creative Writing, Design Multimedia, Technological Systems, and Theater Arts 8.
For students looking to take a deeper dive, year-long electives are also available. These include advanced opportunities such as Advanced Publications, Advanced Theater Arts, Advanced Art, Drawing and Painting, and Multimedia Journalism. Students may also participate in performing arts programs like Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Lion Choir, or audition-only groups like Vox Anima.
Additional year-long offerings include high school credit options such as Spanish I, JROTC, and Algebra I. Students may also apply for unique leadership and service opportunities through Lion Helpers, Lion Interns, and Helping Hands, which provide real-world experience mentoring younger students and supporting school operations.
