Quizzes 30%
Classwork 15%
Homework 15%

Art: Students will have the opportunity to create projects using a variety of materials and media. These projects will teach technique and encourage creativity. Emphasis is placed on the experience of creating original works of art; not just the finished product.

Band: Students may join the Band in the sixth grade. They will have the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument. They will have two performances.

Introduction to Computers: Students will focus on basic computer concepts vocabulary and word processing.

General Music: Students will become more familiar with instrumental and vocal music. They will learn to understand music from a historical time-line, study composers' lives, sing, and explore the elements of music including melody, harmony, rhythm, tone quality (mood), and form.

Physical Education and Health: The Physical Education Department is committed to fostering physical activity among students through the teaching of sports skills, teamwork, and physical fitness. Students will participate in many types of activities, including volleyball, basketball, jump rope, line dance, soccer, and softball. Health topics include drugs and alcohol, nutrition, and first aid.

Each student will receive an agenda in which they will write daily assignments. This is the main avenue of communication between school and home. Please check your child's agenda regularly.

Homework assignments will be posted on individual teacher's websites. You may also call the homework hotline. Dial 966-9655 and choose Option Three. The hotline is updated each day by 4:00 P.M.

You may check your child's grades at any time using the PowerSchool Parent Portal online. There is a link for this on the home page of the New Kent Schools website. Grades are updated each week. If you have questions about logging in to PowerSchool, please contact Ms. Kelly McWhorter in the Guidance Office at 966-8544.
